The easiest part of keeping this resolution will probably be the tooth brushing – most people brush their teeth every day. To maintain good oral health brush morning and night with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush. A quick swipe of the brush doesn’t count, you need to brush for 2 minutes to completely clean your teeth.
A harder part of keeping this New Year’s resolution – the flossing part. Some people just don’t like to floss or they forget. Make flossing a regular part of your daily routine by “scheduling” your flossing time. If you don’t floss because your floss sticks between teeth or shreds then you probably have tooth decay or an old filling that is breaking down. Resolving those problems will make flossing a breeze. If you just can’t get the hang of those long strings of floss, try floss picks or floss holders. These little handles hold a piece of floss in place so your hands do have to. They are available in the toothpaste aisle. Try keeping a bag in your car so you can floss when stuck in traffic or at stoplights.
The third part of your New Years resolution is scheduling a dental hygiene visit every six months (more often if you have gum disease or a chronic illness like diabetes). Good home care is vital, but all the brushing and flossing can’t remove tartar and calculus from below the gum line. Along with squeaky clean teeth, your dental hygiene visit includes important health checks for oral cancers and potential tooth decay.
The links between oral health and overall health are well established. Resolve to make 2014 a healthier year by maintaining a healthy smile!
