We expect “dog breath” from our four legged friends but we aren’t as accepting of halitosis in humans. Rothfus Family Dental wants to help.
Most adults have random bouts of bad breath, but almost a quarter of us have a chronic problem. Eating foods like garlic, onions and drinking coffee are common causes of temporary halitosis.
Some medical conditions like sinus infections, diabetes and liver or kidney disease can cause foul breath, 95% of the problems start with oral bacteria. Keeping these bacteria in check will keep your breath fresh and help you avoid tooth decay and gum disease.
- Keep your teeth and gums in top condition. Brush, floss and visit the dentist for regular cleanings. A professional dental hygiene visit is the only way to get at problems under the gum line that your toothbrush can’t reach.
- Buy a tongue scraper. Brushing and flossing can’t remove the bacteria that lives on your tongue. Regular use of a tongue scraper removes the hard-to-reach stuff that is the primary cause of stinky breath.
- Don’t attempt a coverup with mints or mouth rinses. The sugar in these products serves as food for the bacteria and once the minty smell has vanished (in just a few minutes) your breath will be even worse. Keep a travel toothbrush handy and use it as needed.
- Stop smoking!
- Chew sugar free gum. Chewing will stimulate the flow of saliva which is a natural way to clean your mouth and the xylitol in the gum helps control bacteria.
