Kids Need To Start Dental Visits Early In Life

Kids who start visiting the dentist early in life have lots of advantages. In honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month we feel we thought we would point out a few benefits of regular general family dentistry visits for the little ones.

Because children who have regular dental visits have received preventative care their entire lives they typically have fewer cavities than other kids. This translates to a lifetime of better oral health, fewer fillings, crowns and less tooth loss.  Your child should have their first dental appointment by age two.

Children who are dental regulars are also very relaxed during dental appointments and don’t typically exhibit fear or anxiety about treatment.  If your child is feeling nervous here are a few steps you can take as a parent to help the visit go smoothly.

  • Talk to your child about the appointment but don’t give a lot of details. The dentist will describe the procedure in a way your child can understand.
  • Don’t talk about needles or tell your child that something will hurt.
  • Do stress how important it is to keep teeth and gums healthy.
  • Please don’t share any unpleasant experiences you may have had as a child, dentistry has changed a lot over the years.

It is important that your child have positive experiences at the dentist while young so that they don’t run the risk of developing a dental phobia later in life.
