Years ago, missing teeth were considered a part of growing old. For many people the only options they had to replace these missing teeth were bridges or partials and dentures. Both of these procedures have their benefits, but they also have their downsides.
With a bridge, the teeth on either side of the missing tooth space are reduced to look like small teeth and utilize the same technique as crowns. An impression is taken and a metal or ceramic frame is fabricated. Then porcelain is stacked on top of the frame to replace all the missing tooth structures. This porcelain frame combination is then fitted and cemented over the two adjacent teeth. It is considered permanent. However, according to national averages this bridge will get a cavity under it or break and it will have to be replaced within 7-10 years.
Partials and Dentures
Partials and dentures are commonly used to replace missing teeth. They are fabricated using a series of impressions and appointments to fit and adjust. They are made of pink plastic to rest on the gums and plastic teeth to replace the missing tooth structure. In some cases a metal framework is fabricated and then the plastic is added. Both of these are removable, usually taken out at night, cleaned and placed in a container until ready to use the next day. Partials and dentures are a “less expensive” way to replace multiple missing teeth, but they tend to cover large areas of the mouth and are less efficient to chew with than conventional crown and bridge.
Dental Implants in Medford, Oregon
The most predictable and longest lasting replacement for missing teeth is the placement of a dental implant. Implants are fabricated from titanium and are extremely compatible with the bone and gums of the mouth. The implant is placed into the gums and bone using a surgical procedure.
This is usually very comfortable, and most people say that is was easier than having a tooth pulled. The bone then forms a hard bond to the implant. Once this happens, usually in 3-6 months, the dentist then takes an impression of the top of this implant and has the lab fabricate what is called and an abutment.
The implant represents the “root” of the tooth, and the abutment represents the “tooth” in the mouth. From this point, a crown is made to cover the abutment and is cemented or attached to the abutment using a small screw.
Dental Implant Advantages
An implant has countless advantages. They are considered to have a 98% success rate. You can never get a cavity on an implant. There is no “destruction” of the adjacent teeth to make the implant. They are considered to be permanent and in most cases they will last a lifetime. The investment of getting a dental implant, abutment and crown is about the same as a bridge; however, the bridge will need to be replaced at least a couple times as opposed to a dental implant.
Dental implants can be also used as anchors to assist in the retention of partials and dentures. In many cases, implants have been placed and with precision attachments in the partial or denture they can feel less bulky and be more stable than you could have ever dreamed possible.
