The battery operated Arm & Hammer Spinbrush has been on the market for many years and is popular with kids and adults. Kids like it because it makes brushing fun and adults like an electric toothbrush that can be bought for such a reasonable price but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that the brushes may break while spinning.
The FDA stated that the Spinbrushes may break during use causing injury to teeth and eyes. The broken pieces may also be a choking hazard. The company that manufactures the brushes, Church & Dwight Co. Inc., have taken steps to try to improve the product including: bristles that turn color to remind users to replace the brush, releasing statements on TV and in advertisements about product safety, and making label changes that remind consumers to replace the head or the brush every three months or if something is loose or broken.
Parents are advised to always supervise children when they are using the Spinbrush and to inspect the brush before use. Children should not be allowed to bite down on the head of the brush while it is spinning and parents should follow the instructions carefully. If the brush appears damaged report the problem to Church & Dwight, the manufacturing company, at 1-800-352-3384.
Rothfus Family Dental believes that teaching children good oral hygiene habits is a gift that will last them a lifetime. A fun toothbrush can make brushing more enjoyable for kids and we know that electric toothbrushes are very effective at removing dental plaque. Removing plaque helps prevent cavities and gum disease but safety is important. Follow the guidelines and check the toothbrush (electric or the good old fashioned kind) for any damage or worn bristles. If you see a problem toss the brush and get a new one.
